What hedge trimming & removal actually involves.
What it is
Hedge work covers the routine — an annual or twice-yearly cut to keep a hedge sharp — through hard renovation of a hedge that has run wild, right up to full removal when a hedge has outgrown the space or a boundary needs replacing with fencing.
Who it's for
Homeowners with a boundary hedge that has crept out over the pavement, landlords wanting a smart-looking let, farms with shelter-belt or field-boundary hedging, and anyone whose neighbour has finally asked about that leylandii.
When it's needed
Formal hedges (yew, box, beech) benefit from one late-summer cut. Faster-growing species (leylandii, laurel, privet) usually want two cuts a year. Renovation cuts on badly-overgrown hedges are best in late winter for deciduous species and early spring for many evergreens.
Why professional help matters
Above chest height, hedge work becomes a two-person, roped-and-braced job. A pole trimmer over head height without training is one of the more common ways gardeners end up in A&E. We do it from proper platforms, with correct PPE, and rake up as we go.
What happens when this gets put off.
The reason people call us is almost always that the small job is now a bigger one. Here's what's usually happening under the surface.
Chainsaw and cutter injury
Overhead hedge-cutter work causes serious injuries every year. It is not a homeowner job.
Killing the hedge with a bad cut
Conifers cut back into old wood do not regrow. Some deciduous hedges will — some won't. The species dictates the strategy.
Neighbour disputes
An out-of-control hedge that overhangs a neighbour's garden or blocks their light is a common source of formal complaints.
Nesting bird offences
Cutting a hedge in nesting season with active nests present is a criminal offence under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. Timing matters.
Common mistakes we're called in to fix
- Cutting a leylandii back into brown wood — it won't come back.
- Trimming in nesting season without checking for nests.
- Skipping the cuttings clean-up — leaving arisings kills the grass beneath.
- Trying to remove a mature hedge with a stump ring rather than proper grinding.
- Cutting only the sides and letting the top run away year after year.
Step by step, so nothing surprises you.

Hedge Trimming & Removal — the full picture.
Hedge work varies by species, height, purpose and the state the hedge is currently in. Below is the range we cover.
Methods & materials
Formal annual trim
Formal hedges kept at agreed height and face. Once or twice a year depending on species.
Reduction / renovation cut
Height and depth reduced significantly on an overgrown hedge, timed to the species so regrowth is triggered rather than killed.
Full removal
Hedge cut down, stumps ground or dug out, ground made good for replanting, turfing or fencing.
Replacement with fencing
Common combined job — old hedge removed and a new fence built on the boundary. See our fencing service.
Waste handling
Cuttings chipped on site or removed whole under our SEPA registration.
Variations we cover
Leylandii and conifer hedges
The most common Perthshire hedge job — routine trims, hard reductions where possible, or full removal where the hedge has run away.
Beech and hornbeam
Late-summer trim to hold shape; hard reduction late winter if renovation is needed.
Laurel, privet, box
Regular trims through the growing season; reductions timed carefully.
Native and mixed hedgerows
Country-boundary work, laid or trimmed depending on the client's preference.
Residential vs commercial
For domestic clients the priority is appearance and neighbour relations. For commercial and rural clients — farms, holiday lets, small-holdings — the priority is boundary integrity and getting a heavy run done in a single visit.
