What lawn installation actually involves.
What it is
Full turf-laid lawns — from stripping and preparing the ground through to laying and rolling quality turf. Not seed, not overseeding an existing patchy lawn — a properly prepared, freshly laid, level, usable lawn.
Who it's for
New-build owners with subsoil where a garden should be, homeowners whose old lawn has gone to moss and thatch, landscapers replacing lawn area after building work, and anyone who has tried to rescue a bad lawn and finally decided to start over.
When it's needed
Turf can be laid from early spring through to late autumn in Scotland. Avoid frozen ground, hot dry spells and periods of prolonged waterlogging. We'll advise on the best window at the site visit.
Why professional help matters
A rolled-out roll of turf on unprepared ground stays alive for weeks, then dies. Turf survives on the depth and quality of the soil beneath it, the level of the surface, and how tightly the joints were butted. All three are the installer's job, not the turf's.
What happens when this gets put off.
The reason people call us is almost always that the small job is now a bigger one. Here's what's usually happening under the surface.
Turf that dies within months
Poor prep, wrong depth, unlevelled ground — and the lawn you paid for is patchy and yellow by the second summer.
Standing water and moss
Bad drainage under new turf turns the lawn to sponge within a year.
Uneven, unmowable surface
Skipping the levelling stage locks in bumps and hollows the mower catches on forever.
Weeds coming through from below
Failing to clear perennial weeds before laying turf means they push straight up through the seams.
Common mistakes we're called in to fix
- Laying turf on subsoil rather than topsoil.
- Not rolling and firming the base before laying.
- Butting turf loosely, leaving visible seams that dry out and open up.
- Skipping the aftercare watering schedule — turf must be watered in properly to root down.
- Trying to save money on turf quality — the difference in a year is huge.
Step by step, so nothing surprises you.

Lawn Installation — the full picture.
Turf-laying looks simple. It isn't. The variables that actually determine the outcome are all below the surface — quite literally.
Methods & materials
Ground clearance
Old lawn, weeds and any surface debris removed. On new-build plots this often means clearing builders' rubble too.
Levelling and grading
Ground brought to consistent level, with a very slight fall for drainage where the site allows.
Topsoil import
Where existing soil is thin or contaminated with subsoil, we bring in quality screened topsoil to depth.
Firming and raking
Base firmed and raked to fine tilth so turf beds down without air pockets.
Turf laying
Quality Scottish-grown turf laid in staggered rows, joints butted tight, edges trimmed, rolled after laying.
Variations we cover
New-build lawns
Full-scope: rubble clearance, topsoil, level, lay.
Replacement lawns
Old lawn stripped, ground reset, new turf laid.
Shape changes
Straight edges, curved edges, mowing strips, tree-well cuts — all part of the lay-out stage.
Small-area repairs
Patch repairs where a section has failed but the surrounding lawn is sound.
Residential vs commercial
For homes the priority is a lawn that looks finished the day we hand over. For commercial and rental clients the priority is a lawn that stands up to mowing contractors and looks presentable through the season.
