Overview

What soft landscaping actually involves.

What it is

Soft landscaping is everything green and growing in a garden — turf, borders, hedging, planting schemes, ground cover, low-maintenance beds and the shaping of soil and levels that makes them all sit right. We handle the planning conversation, the clearance, the ground prep and the planting through to a finished, ready-to-use garden.

Who it's for

New-build owners staring at a scraped patch of subsoil, families whose garden hasn't been touched since they moved in, downsizers who want less lawn and more low-maintenance planting, and holiday-let owners who need a garden that photographs well without demanding constant work.

When it's needed

Autumn and spring are the two best planting windows in Perthshire, but ground prep and hard elements — edging, paths, levels — can be done any time the weather allows. Book ahead for the shoulder seasons; they fill quickly.

Why professional help matters

A garden that works is 80% ground prep and 20% plants. Skip the prep — drainage, soil condition, levels, weed suppression — and even the best plants sulk and die. Doing it in the right order, once, saves years of piecemeal fixing later.

If it's left

What happens when this gets put off.

The reason people call us is almost always that the small job is now a bigger one. Here's what's usually happening under the surface.

Money spent on plants that die

Buying trays of plants and putting them into poor soil is the most expensive mistake in gardening. They fail, you replace them, and you're twice out of pocket.

A garden you can't use

Unresolved drainage, uneven ground and half-finished projects mean the garden becomes a chore rather than a room outdoors.

Escalating weed problems

Skipping proper clearance means every 'improvement' is fighting yesterday's weeds. Perennial weeds like couch grass and ground elder come back stronger every year.

Long-term maintenance overload

Planting the wrong things — high-maintenance species in the wrong spot — locks you into weekend work forever.

Common mistakes we're called in to fix

  • Turfing over unlevelled, un-prepared ground.
  • Planting shrubs at the wrong depth or in the wrong aspect.
  • Skipping edging — beds and lawns blur into each other within a season.
  • Ignoring drainage on heavy Perthshire clay.
  • Buying plants before agreeing a scheme, then trying to make the garden fit them.

In detail

Soft Landscaping — the full picture.

Soft landscaping is a category, not a single job. Below is a working list of what we take on and how we approach each part.

Methods & materials

Site clearance

Overgrown gardens cut back, unwanted shrubs and root-balls removed, weeds sprayed or dug where they've taken over. All arisings removed under our waste carrier registration.

Soil preparation

Rotavation where appropriate, topsoil imported where needed, levels graded to the finished design.

Turf-laid lawns

See our lawn-installation page — proper prep, quality turf, guaranteed with correct aftercare.

Border creation and mulching

Beds cut in, edged, weed membrane and bark mulch applied where the design calls for it.

Planting

Shrubs, ornamentals, hedging and specimen trees selected for aspect, soil and long-term size. We favour plants that suit Perthshire's climate — winter-hardy, worth looking at year-round.

Hedging install

Bare-root and rootballed hedging planted in the correct season for the species — beech, hornbeam, laurel, holly, native mixes.

Variations we cover

New-build gardens

Full-scope: turf, borders, boundaries, paths, planting — from a scraped subsoil plot to a finished garden.

Overgrown-garden rescues

Clearance, ground reset and replant, often over two phases with a spraying interval in between.

Refresh & re-plant

Existing structure kept, tired planting refreshed, mulch redone, edges re-cut.

Low-maintenance conversions

Reducing lawn area, adding gravelled or planted beds — see our low-maintenance gardens page.

Residential vs commercial

For homeowners the outcome is a garden you want to be in. For commercial clients — offices, holiday lets, care sites — the priority is a scheme that stays looking finished with minimum in-year work. We tailor the plant list either way.
