What bark mulch & woodchip actually involves.
What it is
Bark mulch and woodchip supplied in bulk for use on planting beds, shrub borders, tree-well surrounds and garden pathways. Available as supply-only, or supply-and-spread with our team laying it to depth over prepared beds.
Who it's for
Homeowners looking to smarten borders and cut down on weeding, gardeners refreshing tired beds, holiday-let owners wanting a clean seasonal finish, and clients we're already installing planting for.
When it's needed
Ideally applied in late winter or early spring — soil warm enough, plants dormant or emerging, ahead of the main weed germination window. Autumn top-ups are also common.
Why professional help matters
Mulch does two very useful things — locks in moisture and suppresses annual weeds — but only if it goes on to properly-prepared ground at the right depth. Too thin and weeds punch through; too deep against stems and you rot the plants you're trying to protect.
What happens when this gets put off.
The reason people call us is almost always that the small job is now a bigger one. Here's what's usually happening under the surface.
Weeds coming straight through
Mulch spread over an already-weedy bed just gives them a comfortable seed-bed.
Stem rot from over-piling
Mulch piled against shrub and tree stems traps moisture and causes rot.
Wrong material for the job
Fresh woodchip on planted beds can leach nitrogen; composted bark is the right product for most borders.
Wasted material
Too shallow a layer looks great for a fortnight, then vanishes into the soil and does nothing.
Common mistakes we're called in to fix
- Mulching over live weeds without clearance.
- Piling mulch up against stems and trunks.
- Using fresh chippings on a planted border rather than composted bark.
- Applying too thin a layer — 50–75mm is the working range.
- Mulching in dry weather without watering the bed first.
Step by step, so nothing surprises you.

Bark Mulch & Woodchip — the full picture.
Bark and woodchip aren't interchangeable. What you pick depends on where it's going and what you want it to do.
Methods & materials
Composted bark mulch
The default for planted beds — dark, uniform, low nitrogen draw, breaks down slowly.
Woodchip
Coarser, cheaper, well suited to pathways, tree-well surrounds and rougher-use areas.
Bulk delivery
Delivered by the load. We'll match quantity to the area at the site visit.
Depth
50–75mm is the working range on planted beds. Deeper for pathways where you want a longer-lasting surface.
Variations we cover
Planting-bed mulching
The most common use — refreshing a border after planting or as an annual dressing.
Tree-well mulch rings
Ring of mulch around new trees, kept clear of the stem — reduces mowing damage and holds moisture.
Woodland-style pathways
Woodchip laid over compacted base for informal garden paths.
Play areas and rough surrounds
Softer, forgiving surface under garden equipment where dead falls need cushioning.
Residential vs commercial
For homes it's usually supply-and-spread on planted borders. For commercial and rural sites — schools, care homes, holiday lets, estates — larger volumes go into pathways, tree lines and boundary planting.
